What to do first
Right after you decide to have a baby the first thing to do is to talk to your gynecologist. Gynecologist will make sure that you have all proper vaccination done (such as German measles) and that you start taking more of vital nutrients and vitamins such as folic acid to prevent any child development problems. Your doctor will also answer any questions that you have and will go over steps to get pregnant and what to expect during pregnancy.
When to conceive
Many women think that they can get pregnant right after they stop using contraceptives. In reality, you can only get pregnant in those few days when you are ovulating, and therefore the best time to become pregnant will depend on your menstrual cycle. If you have regular periods, usually ovulation occurs around day 14 of your menstrual cycle. This will be the best time to try to conceive your baby. Since it is hard to predict exactly when ovulation occurs the best practice is to start having intercourse every other day between days 10 and 18 of your menstrual cycle. It is also common to use period or ovulation calculators which predict your ovulation day and your next period day based on your historical menstruation data. You can use our website to track your periods and predict ovulation and if you are interested go here for more information.
Ovulation kits for testing at home
Sometimes you may want to be more precise than just relying on period and ovulation predictions. If you need to know exactly when you are ovulating you can buy an at-home ovulation determination kit. This kit will determine the level of critical hormones in your blood and will detect the rise in their levels that corresponds to ovulation. You can also purchase a thermometer to track your basal body temperature. As you watch this temperature over your menstrual cycle you should see a rise in the values of about 0.8 degrees, which usually indicates that your ovulation.
Still can't get pregnant?
If you've been trying to get pregnant for one or two months and you haven't been successful, don't panic! Depending on the individual circumstances such as taking birth control pill previously, it is perfectly normal if you can't get pregnant right away. Once your cycle becomes more regular chances of successfully conceiving will increase as well. If you are still concerned and unable to get pregnant, visit your gynecologist again and he will be able to recommend further treatments.
The best course of action is to take time, do not stress too much and have fun! Focusing too much on the goal may make you very frustrated which, by creating more stress, may lower your chances of getting pregnant. So, relax, take your time and you'll be unexpectedly surprised!
