You have probably heard about negative effects of restaurant prepared food, especially fast food. Numerous studies have linked fast food consumption to increased risks of obesity, which in turn may lead to much more severe diseases such as cardiovascular disease or diabetes. Not only do you give up the control over what exactly goes into your meal when you are dining out, but you are usually forced to consume food that is overly rich in fat content, sugar and salt. It may also be prepared in unhealthy ways such as frying, which increases chances of harmful byproducts formation. A lot of times, ingredients, purchased by restaurants or fast food places, may contain large amounts of various preservatives, health impacts of which may not be understood to the full extent. Despite strict government regulations, sanitary conditions may be a concern as well. As you can see by now, eating out, albeit providing a lot of convenience, may not be such a great idea after all.
Homemade meals, on the other hand, provide a great opportunity to begin or maintain a healthy and enjoyable lifestyle. With home cooked foods you have a total control of what goes into your meal, and you can choose your own ingredients from a wide selection of organic produce available in the market. By cooking at home and paying attention, you can better ration your food, so you don't end up overeating and consuming more calories than you actually need. It is also easier to follow good diet habits by incorporating a variety of healthy ingredients, such as vegetables, lean meats, beans, spinach, sprouts and whatever else you may consider as providing great benefits to your health.
Unfortunately, with all the dining out choices and quick meals available these days, it is very difficult to find enough time, desire and power to come home after work and cook a full meal. But it doesn't have to be too complicated. Here are a few tips that will get you started:
- look for easy to cook recipes online that require only a few ingredients. Pay attention to the ingredients, so that they are not overly rich in fat content or sugar. Carbohydrates, proteins and vitamins are all great and will provide you with energy, amino acids and vital micro chemicals to keep your body well nourished.
- if you find yourself cooking the same meals over and over again, try to introduce more variety by exploring other cuisines. That way you will take advantage of healthy ingredients that you are not consuming and get a chance to learn about other cultures as well. You can find these recipes online too.
- think your home cooked meals are boring? Explore various spices. They will make your food tastier without the addition of too much sodium chloride (salt).
- leftovers! Sometimes it is a good idea to prepare a big batch of food in advance and then eat it over the next few days. This way you can prepare a big meal on a weekend and then enjoy your great cooking over the rest of the busy week. Sometimes you can even freeze this food so it will last more than a week. This way you will create your own healthy frozen meals!
- whether you have a boyfriend, a husband or an entire family with kids, make sure to get all of them involved. It is more exciting to pick out recipes and cook together and will teach your kids important and useful habits about healthy foods and lifestyle.
