Sleeping on your side
If you prefer to sleep on your side place a pillow between your legs and bring your knees up slightly toward your chest. Play around with a pillow size to get into the most comfortable position. This position may be especially helpful for those individuals who have osteoarthritis in the spine, hip pain, or spinal stenosis a narrowing in the spine.
Sleeping on your back
When sleeping on your back, it's a good idea to place a pillow under your knees. This will help maintain the proper curve and position of your lower back. If this is not enough consider putting another additional rolled towel under your lower back for additional support. Give more support to your neck by using another pillow for your head. If you have back pain problems sleeping in this position may ease some of the discomfort.
Sleeping on your abdomen
Sleeping on your stomach is usually not recommended since it creates problems for you back. However, if you have to sleep on your stomach for some reasons it will help to reduce strain in your back if you place a pillow under your abdomen or pelvis. Again, use a head pillow if it doesn't strain your neck too much, or try to avoid it if you start having neck and upper back problems.
Other tips for the best night sleep
- Keep the natural curve of your back
- Avoid sleeping on your side with your knees all the way up to the chest
- Stay away from sleeping on your stomach as it will result in lower back pain over long term
- Choose a firm mattress and box spring, so it doesn't sag and bend your body. Consider placing a board under the mattress if it protrudes through your bed frame.
- Support your lower back. Place a rolled sheet or towel under your waist.
Hopefully, you will find these easy tips useful and they will improve your rest at night!
